Ok everyone, I need help with a crawfish pattern. I am going after citation flathead catfish here in central Virginia. I’m going to have to increase the size of the fly pattern so looking for a good one . Thanks.

A lot of patterns out there to choose from, and many use rust or brown colored zonker strips for the pincers(2 coming off the sides at the bend). Ive tied several different versions and use dumbell eyes to keep the hook up. Wrap a chenille body then hackle like a bugger, then use a strip of thin skin or something on the inside of the hook from the bend to the hook eye. Just like tying the back on a nymph. The hackle on the bottom suggest ‘legs’, and the thin skin is the craws ‘back’ or shell.

When you cast it, let it sink to the bottom then twitch it in short retrieves.

Thank you , I’ll give that a try . I’ll be using 8/0 hooks . These fish can run 40 pounds . I’m going to be lucky to get one to the surface

Ha , never thought about that . Baby lobster. I like to think of it as a delta crawdad . Eatin size , lol . I will gladly post pics when I get one done .

Always cool when your bait is eatin’ size. 🙂

Brown one is on a 4/0 weighted hook
Olive one on a 6/0 weighted hook .

Thank you . I will try them out later this month to see if they work . Tied them from the autumn issue just made them a lot bigger .
